Harrogate - Old and new

On our way back from Scotland in the New Year one of our stops was at Harrogate so I had a wander with my camera.

The first two images that I have processed are these, and they are 'Old and new' in two senses:

- the subject matter

- the almost diametrically opposed way of processing

so I thought it might be interesting to put them both in the same post.

This first one is what you might term the 'old' ie the building is of traditional, 19th centure construction and in processing the image I have relied heavily on the light and shading as captured in the camera

The Majestic

Image

And the second is the 'new' and opened in 1982. I made little use of the light captured and tried to create the building volume by making selections and differential shading of the various sides consistent (in skilled hands but not necessarily mineemoticon) with the chosen direction of light - in this case from the Left Hand Side. This is the'Photographic Drawing' approach of Julia Anna Gospodarou.

Harrogate International Centre

Now I accept that this isn't quite there yet - eg the contrasts need to be stronger, with deeper blacks (say) but it is the best I can currently do (and better that I could have done 6 months ago and so that is progress - for meemoticon)

NB I tried to create a more interesting sky but got nowhere so I have given up on that for the time beingemoticon

Im liking the second one Chris. You have the shades correct because before i read it i thought it was natural light.
Id say the sky is almost there as you are showing where the light is coming from. If you wanted it to stand out a little more then possibly darken the whole of the sky a little. Hard to say without seeing.

Chris, I think you've done a fine job with both. I'm looking at these on my lappy so I may not be seeing the tones at their best but from what I do see, the first one looks very good from what I would assume is a single shot (?). You've managed to keep detail in the shadows without burning out the highlights. Not easy to do.

The second has the makings of a superb image and is testament to how far your skills have developed since first arriving here.

I admire the fact that you're posting up a work in progress and are considering the question of how it could be better. For many, this would be a 'finished' image but you're looking further ahead now. Looks to me like you're finding that 'vision' thingy you were seeking some time ago... emoticon

Re: Harrogate - Old and new

Tony - thanks for your comments. Re the shades I suppose what I am wanting to achieve - so that I can see if I prefer it - is the sort of image where there are lots of blacks and almost minimal white but the whole thing nevertheless works.

Eg this image from the latest Stark

http://stark.uberflip.com/i/627669-no-43

(page 22 if the link hasn't worked properly)

and the ones on pages 25 onwards by Yoshika Wada (I know that the style of these is very similar to the Gospodarou one - and maybe they have been taught by her - but I really do like it.)

Thanks also to you Steve. Yes it was a single shot, but one of three that I took with the camera set on bracketing.

Yes,, as I have said several times elsewhere on the forum it is this forum that has been the largest single factor in my improvement over the past year or so. (The next is reading the Gospodarou/Tjintjelaar book:

http://bthedigitalmonochromeforum.runboard.com/t200829 )

So I feel that this image - or one of the others that I took of HIC - can be nearer to what I wantemoticon

Having said that I still can't get landscapes to be 'right' and am generally too inconsistent in what I produceemoticon but getting thereemoticon

Two good shots Chris. I like the "natural" vignette on the Palace due to the lighting, it draws my eye to the door in the centre.

The HIC is my type of image that I want to take more of. I know we have chatted this topic before and we both "follow" Julia Anna G, we just got to keep at it eh?

Thanks Richard.

In the 'Majestic' picture it IS a natural vignette.

As regards JAG, I am hoping that when she publishes part 2 of 'How to create an architectural fine art photograph':

http://blog.juliaannagospodarou.com

that I will be able to glean enough to get nearer to the stuff she and others produce. In the meantime if you come across anything that covers the same topic I'm all earsemoticon

Very good Chris I like the second image because of its geometry

Both nicely done, completely different in terms of feel.
