(Not wanting to be contrary but.....) For me, in this case, the image works - including the large empty space - because of the amazing tones, and the great composition with the handle pointing to the corner; especially as the lighting from both sides (?one of which was a reflector?) gives a line emphasising the 'pointer'.

I wonder if some indication of the use of a pestle and mortar would enhance or spoil this image otherwise, having used this equipment in the lab and the kitchen, I agree with Chris.
