Brush settings in Photoshop

There are three parameters which seem to get varied depending on what the brush is being used for, these are hardness, opacity, and flow. There is a fourth setting which tablet owners can use which switches the pen pressure sensitivity on and off. I would welcome some guidance from members, based on their experience, on what influences the settings chosen. Also, how are these settings changed when using a tablet instead of a mouse?

Re: Brush settings in Photoshop

don't us e a mouse any more and haven't since getting the tablet

I always choose a really soft brush, and have the zoom on the left side of my wacom (intros 3) to increase or decrease bus size so I can change it really easily

I ignore flow (cos I don't know much about it and haven't seen need for it -I suspect its more for graphic designers who use an airbrush effect)

I use opacity frequently and do so by hitting the numbers on the keyboard not using the panel

i.e. 1=10%
2=20% etc
up to 0=100%

what I often do (because Im lazy) is use brush at 100% and then vary the opacity of the mask which works as long as the mask Im working on needed the brushing to be of even strength in the area I was working on (e.g. just the sky)

I like to set the opacity to 50% and the flow rate to around 60% but make sure you have the settings enabled by pressing F5 for the brush settings

Re: Brush settings in Photoshop

Thank you Simon and Ian but, as a tablet is being used where I presume, the pen is pressure sensitive, does varying the pressure have the same effect as varying the opacity setting?
