I do think it is important to share. Thats why I exhibit and enter contests and show work in places like here. I would never alter my vision or my work to appeal to what is liked by others. If they like it so be it if not thats good to. In fact I am in the frame of mind if to many people like what i am doing then I am doing something wrong. Playing to the masses. Playing it safe. I am also a full time professional (commercial/advertising) and in that world my work is for others and being judged every shoot. You are only as good as your last jog in that world. I do agree with labels like street photography are pretty much useless. A lot of contests are pretty silly but an 8K Leica and over 6K in cash are to me worth throwing a few images at. Plus it's a Leica sponsored contest.  nondisclosed_email@example.com (airfrogusmc)Mon, 16 Nov 2015 04:02:35 +0000 Re: close but no cigarhttps://bthedigitalmonochromeforum.runboard.com/p2042466,from=rss#post2042466https://bthedigitalmonochromeforum.runboard.com/p2042466,from=rss#post2042466A pint or two would be great, I'm into Timothy Taylor's Landlord at present. I suppose we all have different histories and experiences and so different views. This would be a good discussion to have over a pint.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Elines)Sun, 08 Nov 2015 21:15:17 +0000 Re: close but no cigarhttps://bthedigitalmonochromeforum.runboard.com/p2042445,from=rss#post2042445https://bthedigitalmonochromeforum.runboard.com/p2042445,from=rss#post2042445I can get quite fired up. I find the principle of one person judging (not commenting on which is nice, as happens here) another's work questionable. Where are they coming from? Who says they are "experts"? I've been taking photos for 50 years, I see another person's work and have no wish to score it, it either works for me or it doesn't. I feel no need to verbalise a picture in that way. I can think of only two or three photographers (and some of those are dead!) whose opinion I could care less about. I also don't think much to the "photo establishment" here in the UK (e.g. Arts Council) and the U.S. who often run these sort of competitions, let alone the crappy online magazines who set themselves up. I like to see ones such as Inspired Eye" (yes they gave me 30 pages, but the whole mag. has no silly criticisms). Finally I saw the other week a docu. of that Gilden bloke, commenting on a street photographer's work (what a stupid label that is) something like "he shouldn't have got that head in at the back", what a pillock. I think that sums it up for now. Not sure I understand your vehemence on this Richard. Surely as soon as you let someone else see your work then they judge it - even if informally - using their own values and maybe in so doing they are commenting on yours in some way. Sometimes it helps to go to an extreme with an argument to help clarify issues. In this case for example, if I were able to produce images that I didn't like but which I knew would win me a valuable prize then I would do it as I see no problem with doing that. But maybe for some reason you do see a problem and so wouldn't? I don't see why it is degrading. For example when I enter a photo club competition it's nice if I do well but the main benefit is having someone critique my image - as I might learn something- even if I don't actually agree with them. After all that is one of the big benefits of posting images on here. So, in summary ... I'd be interested to hear more about your rationale on this. Only problem is it would be better discussed in a bespoke thread rather than by hijacking this one😊. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Elines)Sun, 08 Nov 2015 16:13:31 +0000 Re: close but no cigarhttps://bthedigitalmonochromeforum.runboard.com/p2042442,from=rss#post2042442https://bthedigitalmonochromeforum.runboard.com/p2042442,from=rss#post2042442Only my 2 pennoth, but I personally wouldn't enter any of these competitions. I understand all the reasons why people do but for me it is a bit of a "gravy train" and degrading. It has become a bit of an industry. I take pictures for me, not for some "expert" who is weary of seeing 1000s of photos. Each to his or her own of course. I get published (usually in the U.S.) not that it is worth it for the money, but I don't want someone who has their own set of values judging mine. www.richardhiston.org nondisclosed_email@example.com (Histon)Sun, 08 Nov 2015 12:34:07 +0000 Re: close but no cigarhttps://bthedigitalmonochromeforum.runboard.com/p2042155,from=rss#post2042155https://bthedigitalmonochromeforum.runboard.com/p2042155,from=rss#post2042155quote:airfrogusmc wrote: The winners are judged by the pre determined and listed judges. This last B&W contest only about 7% of all the entries got n Mark of Excellence and only one winner. Which contest did you enter? I stand corrected. I think the free comp is one where you can vote. I've never entered that one. Ah so its only the free contests where the public votes? Ill give a paid one a go then. Only 6 hours left of voting on this one I'm in. I don't think my 9 votes will cut it tho ;-) nondisclosed_email@example.com (TS446)Fri, 16 Oct 2015 17:48:04 +0000 Re: close but no cigarhttps://bthedigitalmonochromeforum.runboard.com/p2042129,from=rss#post2042129https://bthedigitalmonochromeforum.runboard.com/p2042129,from=rss#post2042129quote:eternumviti wrote: Well caught as usual. Ive noticed they don't tell you how many votes the winners got, so you can't see how you fared against them. nondisclosed_email@example.com (TS446)Thu, 15 Oct 2015 07:18:54 +0000 Re: close but no cigarhttps://bthedigitalmonochromeforum.runboard.com/p2042092,from=rss#post2042092https://bthedigitalmonochromeforum.runboard.com/p2042092,from=rss#post2042092Well caught as usual.
