Is DIY Scanning worth it?

I am starting to use film more, as I have more faith in its permanence! I don't yet have any darkroom facilities, but in the meantime I would like to be able to scan and make the occasional print, up to around A3 size.

I have seen some great scans on this forum, but they seem to all be done with high-end dedicated film scanners like the Nikon Coolscan 9000 ED which my budget does not run to. The scanning would be mostly medium format (645, 6x6 and 6x7) B&W negatives with some colour, and few 35mm negatives.

Before I splash out, can someone advise whether it is worth getting a "domestic" scanner like a Canon Canoscan 9000F MK II, or Nikon equivalent, or will I be doomed to disappointment and should just send them to be scanned professionally?

I have read endless reviews and specifications but I am hopelessly confused about manufacturer's dpi versus real world, interpolated pixels, scan time measured by the calendar and so on.

Thanks in anticipation.

Re: Is DIY Scanning worth it?

Ian, thanks for the very quick reply! If it is fine for 4"x5" and acceptable for 35mm up to 10"x8" it should be sufficient for scanning the medium format and printing not too large.

Many thanks again for taking the time to help.

John

John,
You will probably do better than you think with an Epson V750 scanner, which doubles up for 35mm and medium format. Much depends on getting things right in the camera though, so old fashioned photo skills will render better results. Many years ago i used an flatbed Epson scanner to scan 6x7 negs and was blown away with the quality, even with an old Epson Photo printer which was nothing compared to even the cheapest of multi function printers of today, in fact i wouldn't mind betting that my present MFP would be considered professional quality in comparison to my older stuff if i could compare the two.It would be a good idea to take a neg along to one of the high street stores and see if you could get a sample scan,
Regards,
Alan

Re: Is DIY Scanning worth it?

Alan, thanks for the advice. I'm sure the Epson Perfection V750 gives great results, but is above my budget at £700.

I mentioned the Canonscan 9000F Mark II as that is the kind of amount I was looking to spend. I appreciate your and Ian's help as it looks like I will be disappointed if I try to do it on a limited budget, so that is good to know so I don't waste time and money!

Alan, thanks again for the help. I think I will give it a try with the Canoscan. I also have some old - First World War - 3D glass slides that need to be scanned as they are very fragile, so I will at least be able to get those done.

Regards, John.

PS To Alan. By an act of synchronicity the next photo that came up on another forum was a Mamiya medium format scanned on a Canoscan 9000F. Looked great!

Re: Is DIY Scanning worth it?

John, the Epson's are very good scanners for film. I used the V700 with Colour and B&W film in 5x4, 120 and 35mm and the scans have all the information I need to then process in PS. I went with the 700 as I didn't think the 750 offered much above the 700 for the extra money required.

As the V800/850 have been out for a while now you may be able to find second hand V700/750's at a decent price.

I haven't used a Canon scanner so can't comment on those.
