Identifying where screen saver ictures come from

I am pretty sure the answer is 'no' and even if it isn't as most people on here seem to be Mac users - and I am on a PC - then folk may not know the answer anyway but here goes ......

My screen saver is set to give a slide show of all my pictures. Occasionally something comes up that I had completely forgotten about but which I think I could (now) process into a decent image.

Problem is ...... even though I am pretty sure I know where I took the picture I can't actually find it in my picture file.

Anybody got any suggestions on how to track it down???

If they are part of the wallpaper then they are stored at C:WindowsWebWallpaper if they are a screen saver slide show, do a search for the .scr extension

Thanks for the suggestion Ian - didn't work.

As I understand it the pictures are just 'copied' from anywhere in my Pictures folder and so don't have a special extension.

I'll keep looking

You could always use a program similar to http://sourceforge.net/projects/imgseek/ which apart from its management facilities purports to do an image search.
You will no doubt have to take a screen shot to use as the basis for your search,
I just Googled 'hard disk image search software' to find this one Chris.

Re: Identifying where screen saver ictures come from

Chris, I've just dug out my old laptop that runs Windows XP. From the start menu I chose 'search' and checked the box to search photos and images. In the search box I then typed in *.jpg hit enter and thumbnails of all the photos on my hard drive appeared.
I'm sure that you are not using XP but the search facility must still be there and is probably even more sophisticated now.
(If you suspect that you saved the file as a raw image you would obviously type the appropriate file tail after the full stop, so *.nef for instance.)
Hope this helps and I'm not telling Granny how to suck eggs.

Re: Identifying where screen saver ictures come from

Thanks for the further suggestions.

Version of windows

I am now on my new PC and it came installed with windows 10, although I also have Chrome installed for use when I hit unresolved bugs or something that Edge (the replacement for Internet Explorer in W10) cannot yet handle.

Sucking eggs

You would have great difficulty in teaching me to suck eggs - even when I think I know how to do something then often I don't. emoticon

I hadn't thought of this manual search but have just tried it (*.jpg) and couldn't find what I am looking for emoticon

IMG seek

I have looked at this . Not sure I understand what it does though.

If I take a screen print of the image showing on the screen saver can I use IMG seek to search my pictures folder to find it?

If so then this is a possible solution.

I have never heard of any software that does this or even aware of the possibility. So I wouldn't have known what to do with a screen print if I took one.

PS One explanation I found about it said this:

"imgSeek is a viewer and photo collection manager with content-based search and many other features. The query is expressed either as a rough sketch painted by the user or as another image you supply (or an image in your collection). The searching algorithm makes use of multiresolution wavelet decomposition of the query and database images"

I think it is saying that it can do what I think it does but ?????

Just a thought Chris, make sure that you are searching your entire hard disk and not just 'my documents'.

Re: Identifying where screen saver ictures come from

Thanks for the further suggestion Mike.

Just checked searching on the whole drive and still not found it - I am probably rushing too much.

Does Img seek do what I think ie you load a copy of the image (which I now have in word) and then it will find similar images on your computer?

Ian - thanks for the offer, very kind of you, but as this isn't a mega problem for me - just something I'd like to do - I will just keep trying when the fancy takes me.
