Railway sleeper
Taken at Verona Stazione last year.
In processing this image I was trying to avoid my frequent over-cooking/harsh contrast and be a bit more subtle, always difficult for me
I kept an eye on the histogram and the image has a full range of tones with no blown highlights and a tiny bit of total black.
Getting the rich tones which others on the site get eludes me so any pointers welcomed

Re: Railway sleeper
Hi Chris, I like it. I think the tones are very nice anyway in my monitor. Good job...
I use CS6 and if I need to get specific are light or dark and only want to work that area or there is a small area I don't want to change I will use quick mask.

Re: Railway sleeper
Thanks (?)Alan
Good to get some confirmation that I am on the right lines - I will have another go at an image I have of people as these (photos of people ) are generally outside my comfort zone when it comes to processing.
The prompt for me is that I have been asked by a friend's daughter to do some 'pre-wedding', informal wedding photos of her and her prospective husband. The wedding is next year but they want some photos in the next month or so - so none of the usual pressure associated with weddings for me
As regards masking - yes I have some knowledge of this as it is covered in Martin's excellent Contrast Grading DVD. I actually used it in this image to apply the Colour EFEX Tonal Contrast only to the figure.
My bigger problem is how to use it and other techniques to get the luscious tones that others achieve

Re: Railway sleeper
I think this edit suits the image very well Chris. There are only certain images that you can get those "luscious" tones you refer to. In this instance you did the right thing in not over editing. Nice to hear you are going to do some photos for your friend's daughter's wedding...good luck with that.

Re: Railway sleeper
I also think the tones fit this image VERY well. When I process I adjust to what looks good to my eye and I don't pay any attention to histogram when processing. I then make a print and adjust from there just like in a wet darkroom. The way a print looks can be a lot different from what it looks like on the screen. The screen is like looking at transparencies on a light table. Print is a much different viewing experience. My advice is just go from your gut. You did a great job with this example.

Re: Railway sleeper
Thanks very much Tom and Alan.
I am learning yet again that if I stick to what I like then I generally get better results, even when it is of a genre that I don't normally dabble in.

Re: Railway sleeper
Tones and compo are good, well caught moment, but there is an odd softness about the figure that is jarring, as if you have used a 'glamour' soft-focus filter in the pp software.

Re: Railway sleeper
I like this Chris and find your thoughts interesting.
I've been reviewing my back catalogue and am finding too many of my images seem over-edited and too sharp.
I'm currently experimenting with different editing techniques and 'classic' lenses.
--- Thanks for viewing, Mike
I always welcome critique of my images but prefer to try recommended edits myself.
