How Black Is Black

In my pursuit to understand more about inkjet printing, I decided to do some experimentation.

I have no scientific results only what I have personally experienced.

How Black Is Black

If you have an area in your image which you have set to pure black (RGB 0,0,0) what is the actual shade of black you get when printed.

We all know that our printers are based on CMYK and not RGB so I was curious to see what exactly I got.

This is the document I created in Photoshop and I have used the L values from the LAB mode

I created three shapes and filled them with Black, Middle Grey and White. The white shape has a border around it so I could see the shape when I used the Color Munki to spot measure it. The document was printed on Lyson Satin Semi-Gloss through the ABW driver of the Epson R3880.

This is the result after I spot measured each value with the Color Munki

Notice the Black and White shape. The Black could only reach a value of L9 and White only reached an L value of 95. The white also has some blue tint to it which I am putting down to the OBA in the paper.

I did the same test on a variety of papers and each time got a different reading in both the Black and White shape. The deepest black I could get was a value of 7 which was from Epson Premium Glossy.

So just bare this in mind when choosing your print media that the level of blacks are going to change as well as the whites depending on the level of OBA in the paper.
