Crossing the lake

This image was taken from an old, commercial, 35mm colour slide by Woodsmanterne and shows the ferry at Windermere.

Some nice tones Norman. I like how the grey trees make the ferry stand out.

I also think you've got some good tones here Norman but I don't think you'd go far wrong with a touch of D&B in the trees to help define them a bit better.

Re: Crossing the lake

Thank you both for your kind comments. I did debate with myself about the trees whether to make them better defined or go the other way and have a sort of amorphous background. I'll have another play and see what I prefer.

Re: Crossing the lake

Norman,

I agree with Steve's comments regarding some tonal separation in the trees, in my recent posts from the lakes i faced a similar challenge, changing the tones in channel mixer using the sliders worked for the most part and a little D&B in selected areas, still a nice shot though.

Just a quick question, when you say it was a commercial slide, does this mean it was used in a publication, or did you purchase the slide?

Regards,

Alan

Re: Crossing the lake

Alan, thank you for the helpful comments. Because I am unable to go out and use a camera I satisfy much of my photographic interest by playing around with old slides and negatives. Some are my own and others I find by buying bundles of old commercial slides. The colours of most of these slides are distorted and frequently have very marked colour casts. Most of the casts are red but there are also examples of blue casts. The challenge is to remove as much of the colour casts as possible, convert to black & white and then select anything of interest by cropping and try to improve on the tonal range.

Norman,
I googled "Woodsmanterne" and found many slides of local historic interest, it must be interesting to use this avenue for your own enjoyment.

Re: Crossing the lake

Alan, about 4 years ago I contacted Woodmansterne and they gave me permission to use their old slides provided I mentioned their name whenever I did so.

I think the effect is just right on the far trees, a classic film look, for me its part of a canvas just a back drop that is of no importance other than to be a part of the scene, the real important elements look great against it, Norman leave well alone

Re: Crossing the lake

You make a valid point, Martin, although this image has been digitally processed it started its life as an image on film and most of my experience has been with images on film so perhaps that is why I kept those trees purely as a backdrop.
