Where do you stop editing

Does anyone else suffer as I do when editing? just where and when to stop?
There are so many different ways to present an image that its often a case of saving several different edited images then trying to choose what I think I like. Then if I enter that image into a club competition sod's law the judge will say "brighter sky better" etc when I have a "brighter sky" version also - grrrrr!

Re: Where do you stop editing

I think this is something that can happen in both a traditional darkroom as well as the digital darkroom.

It is a difficult one to overcome, you just have to be decisive and know when the image has reached your vision.

As for competition judges, it has always amazed me how a third party can pigeon hole your art based on his/hers opinion. Surely art is subjective.

What makes your image second place just because you decided to put the subject in the centre of the frame or because you decided to raise your black points to lower the contrast ?

Re: Where do you stop editing

This topic takes me back many years to my darkroom days. There was a photograph of a part of an old derelict locomotive that I put in for a competition, The judge, an artist, drooled over the image not for its photographic qualities but because I had left an old, bent washer lying on the piece of the engine. According to the judge most people would have removed the washer but leaving it there was pure artistry. I wasn't brave enough to admit that, until he mentioned it, I hadn't seen the piece of bent metal.

At another competition the photograph was almost torn to pieces, the judge was an industrial photographer.

Sometimes what helps is to reach a point, stop and make a small print. put the print on the desk / wall and leave it for a few days and see how you like it then.

Thanks for the idea Ian, what I have tried is making a "collage" of the different outputs then study them all at once on screen but that didn't work too well, I will try your idea of printing and posting

Re: Where do you stop editing

AFAIC Judges are irrelevant. I don't photograph to please run of the mill people who place their mundane values above exploration, the avant garde, the surreal, adventure, imagination and passion.

I want to learn how to amaze myself, not them.

What I do is pretty much what George DeWolfe does (which Martin has referenced many time s in the past

Process for a bit, whilst zooming in and out - I find I can tell if an image has potential better by looking at it at thumbnail size. The leave the room with the screen set to stay on and place facing the door. Come back in an notice your FIRST reaction to it. Work some more, repeat process. again and again until you think it's worth posting, then post to the group and get not only the feedback from here but also to see what it looks like posted AND what it looks like LATER when you come back to it again and see it posted

This is why much odf what I post is not what I think is my best but rather what Im struggling with (except sometimes I just feel like *sharing" emoticon. But when I want help I post it as soonn as I feel stuck- or suspect I may be

these processes to help us step AWAY from it are the key to knowing whether we have got it to the point were thought we were aiming for or not

(unless you're Martin in which case it's down to natural talent!!!)
emoticon

For myself- I always knew I was a genuis when it came to colour emoticon = but also knew I struggled with mono. I just do - could never see where the rider was on mono TV when I could hear him galoping across te screen - but where the hell was he?!!!

This forum has done everything to change that

thanks guys

As regards judges ..... My experience is that when a judge is commenting on maybe 30 or more images you can soon tell if (s)he is being very formulaic and restrictive in their views

Sometimes when they comment on an image they can make sense but not always.

Having said that they have rather a thankless task - ie trying to comment sensibly on a wide range of images that they have just seen for the first time.

There is a school of thought that says (something like) you can't properly assess any work of art at first viewing.
