Light rays

Ok - pretty poor title but I couldn't come up with anything betteremoticon

I'm conscious that lately I have been commenting more on other people's images rather than posting my own for comment. Main reason is that my 'photographic' time was being spent on reading 'From Basics ....'.

So that when I have finished the substantive part of the book I was ready to process an image and decided I would have a go at the processing method described in the book. I need to emphasise that in many ways the processing of images is not the main thrust of the book, but never the less it contained some aspects that I know I am not too good at.

In particular

SELECTIONS

- I found the selection of the structure difficult because in some parts eg the thinner struts in the bottom RH corner parts of the struts were the same shade as the sky - you will see that the selection is not that good in that area. Maybe the root problem is that I used the quick selection tool and should have used the polygonal selection tool

GRADIENT TOOL

- I eventually got the gradient tool to give the sort of effect I was looking for but only after many failed attempts.

In any event I didn't apply the full processing approach of the book to the image as the tools in Photoshop Elements are not sophisticated enough.

I will be enquiring on Elements Village about tutorials on selections and gradient tool but if anyone has any links/advice etc that they think would help I would be interested to know.

Excellent work Chris, persistence has won over in the end....what about some technical details, camera and exposure etc, did you use a tripod?

Alan

A pretty poor title, but a darned good image. I really like how you seen the potential for an image in the first place and well done for a great edit Chris considering you have only started to do this seriously.

Wow - thanks for all those great comments.

First of all here is the original:

(You can see what I meant about the poor selection of the thinner cable thingiesemoticon)

Re technical details:

Image

And no tripod - hand held - but I was probably leaning against something to help steady the capture.

The actual object is the Marine Way Bridge at Southport.

NB as regards processing what I did was:

- eliminate the clouds
- select the bridge (this was very tedious)
- save the selection
- put a gradient dark to light along the 'cables)
- put a gradient dark to light from the edge of the images and toned it down with the slider to get what I wanted.

Thanks for the comments - patience is not a strong virtue of mine so I will be trying to find a better way of making selections for the future - and am currently researching on Elements Village

Chris, this really is a good edit. You do seem to have taken a great deal from this book and applied the principles well.

Interesting to watch you grow artistically and thank you for sharing your insights.

Thanks very much Steve.

Yes I have taken a great deal from the book - although in many ways the particular processing method they use is not the most important part - not so far as I see it anywayemoticon.

One of the (many) stated objectives of the book is

'To start an artistic revolution in photography'

And I think that if people begin to apply their general approach to vision, trying the practical exercises etc then they will develop their own style/approach etc and G&T may well succeed in thatemoticon
