Get knotted

Image

A bit of Trento Duomo

I used a combination of SFX pre-sets - wet rocks, full dynamic harsh and full contrast and structure.

I can' remember in what order or exactly which as I forgot to re-label the layers and in PSE 11 you can't identify them after the event.

Views please - I think I may have overdone it as the stone looks a bit metallic now, but I would be interested in the views of others

To much processing Chris, it looks more like metal than wood emoticon

Re: Get knotted

I can remember when I first got my hands on SFEX I thought that those hard contrasty presets was the answer to everything until I joined the forum and then realised that little and selective is best when it comes to structure and sharpening. So much so Chris that I never use any preset now and only apply structure very selectively, probably Martin would say maybe still too much.
When I view your image on my 21 inch monitor I have to scroll up and down to see it fully, which in my opinion spoils the initial impact Chris. I have started to post my photos at 800 pixels maximum in depth in order to view it without scrolling. It is just a thought and maybe it is my monitor.

Anyway, you have the makings compositionally of a good strong abstract and with a little less editing you will end up with a very decent image.

Thanks Tom for the very well-timed encouragementemoticon

I have had several go's and still can't get it how I want/like so I was going to give up on it - but I'll keep bashing away instead

I think when you have an idea you just have to keep trying at it until you finally get what you originally wanted

It takes me absolutely ages sometimes, and even with others comments sometimes ( my beloved's usually) saying to give up on it , if I am convinced tehres something in there to br brought out I'll keep at it.

Sometimes you just have to try everything just to see what you get.

Lie others have said , now I also use presest only selectively and in fact theonly presets I use I use at the very end, i.e. usually justa midtone contrast boot. All other presets tend toeither overdo it or take me ina different direction, theres very little option in the end, I find, except to use CG for anything that needs subtle and selective work.

the composition of this just begs for someting to bring it out to best effect but what ever it is will be worth it as it IS compositionally very strong

Re: Get knotted

Thanks for the further encouragement.

Re pre-sets I think that for me they are very useful at this stage to give me an approximation of a given effect (eg wet rocks).

If I just played about with sliders to try and get (say) a wet rock effect then I would just get bored and disheartened.

But using the presets I can then use the sliders to tweak - and eventually (I hope) not need them at all
