Re: FROM BASICS TO FINE ART....

Chris,

At one time it was THE book to read and discuss. Now, some decades later, it is rather an awkward view on photography, looking at photos and generally stating (albeit veiled) that it is all impossible and so perhaps should not be done at all.

I know it looks like disrespect, which it isn't. It was a new view into photography and served a purpose. One of those steps that needed to be taken to get to where we are now.

But hard to chew. Philosophical, sometimes rambling and long winded. After a few chapters you have enough for a while.

And it really does not want you to go out there and take photos.

Thanks Marco - that very much fits in with the '1' score reviews I read.

But I have to say that the 'From basics to fine art' book is NOT like that.

As I say, it IS strong on the theory/vision/philosophy but also has good practical stuff too and DOES encourage you to go out and practice (not that I have been doing much myself lately emoticon )

I'm having a calm moment regarding photography. Too much of my creative energy in work (which is good, as it is necessary).

And there's this light ray camera waiting for me. But it goes with a manual and I somehow keep on walking around it. So perhaps I'm not reading on photography (I've done that a LOT, no worries), because I MUST read that manual ... perhaps I should have my brain checked or at least read a book about how it works emoticon )

I admire your perseverance with this book Chris. I have a bookshelf full of similar tomes which I purchased at the start of my degree course in photography (sadly dropped because of family issues) but they always send me to sleep after a while.

know what you mean - I can't stay awake long enough to learn anything! - which is why after sitting on my shelves for years I gave £400 worth of photo technique and photoshop technique book to charity

one of the earlier books I read on photography and I agree - it puts you off photography!

However metamorphosis by Barthes is a good antidote

Thanks - downloaded it but won't be getting around to reading it for some time - not yet finished 'From Basics...' yet.

When you say:

"here's few images from MW - whether the ones mentioned are there ofr not I dont knwo - I have recently got two of his books from amazon - they are well worth it im`o"

did you mean to add in a link to some of GDW's pictures and is it his books you have recently bought?? If so which one(s) are you referring to please

Just as a matter of interest .... GDW is one of the people who has written a foreword to 'From basics..'

Re: FROM BASICS TO FINE ART....

Chris,

I've read 'From Basics...' a couple of times [sign in to see URL] are parts of it that are indeed interesting and worthwhile but, overall, I'm afraid I didn't find it to be the read I was hoping for- and I did have high hopes from these two.

Susan [sign in to see URL] fell asleep.

The one chap who I doff my cap to is Bruce Barnbaum...

His latest book is due out the 30th of this month.

=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1414956697&sr=1-6&keywords=bruce+barnbaum" rbtag2="rb-qdecode-href-en" ping="http://www.runboard.com/ping">[sign in to see URL]=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1414956697&sr=1-6&keywords=bruce+barnbaum

Should be good.

Regards

Steve
