Panzer III and IV

Image

Image

Being a manager in a company that designs and builds armored vehicles, I am of course interested in the history of these machines. As I was in the neighborhood, an open day at the "Panzer Museum" in Munster, Germany was managed into the agenda.

I'm very happy to be 6 foot 4 inches tall and even then had to stand on my toes and shoot in the blind to catch these shots: some 10,000 - 15,000 other folks had had the same idea emoticon

It is rather interesting to see the Panzer III and Panzer IV, as not many are around in driving condition. And if you're interested, I can recommend "Panzer leader" by Heinz Guderian (who was, by the way, one of the few not to be prosecuted as a war criminal at Neurenberg in 1945).

Wow they look in fine condition and small in comparison to the modern goliaths.
Good blind shots. I'll have to try shutting my eyes!

It hadn't occurred to me that the Netherlands had a heavy arms industry. Are they divisions of the German juggernauts such as ThyssenKrupp?

Blind shots: it took a few emoticon

Company: Rheinmetall, German with a sub in the Netherlands, former Henschel (among others of the Tiger Panzer). Long (hi)story ... Funny how the world changes in half a century.

Indeed it is, but regardless of what has gone before, good to work for a company with such an heritage. Beautiful engineering is to be admired despite its purpose.
I spent an interesting few hours in La Coupole bunker museum near Calais recently. The engineering that went into the V1 and V2 rockets was astonishing for its time.

I believe that Munster also has a running Panzer V (Panther), albeit re-engined with a modern diesel. They are substantially more 'modern' looking, and certainly large!

Difficult one this - they are good conversions and excellent documentary shots, but with all those people and that wretched safety fencing there is no opportunity to find 'atmosphere'. Interesting though.

Running vehicles: not only a Panther, but also a STUG and some others. They "take them out" sparingly, as parts are hard to come by.

"Atmosphere": there was lots of it, albeit damp smelling emoticon
