I read your review too Simon. Bloody good read it was!

Shame a few of the posts were deleted though as I'd like to have read it all.

So, is it worth getting?

thanks (hoped you cliked that you liked it ? emoticon )

The only reason I'd buy that sort of book would be to keep it as a reference book, and it would need indeed to have every B+W technique knownn to man and then it might very well be worth getting to keep as a reference book , hoewever it doesn't.

Not only does it not fulfill the promise of the title, most importantly doesnt have the one's that are best IMO (i.e. CG, and/or history brush - just my opinion!) I can't remeber but Im not sur he evem mentions the hitory brush technique but as I say - can't rmemeber so could be wrong.

Poin is the title is misleading, in fact simply wrong. It'sa marketing name pure and simple. Really the book is about HIS favourite techniques.

There is one technique that was intersting to me, and will especially appeal to those who like complex methods, i.e. his triple Channel mixer method, ie/e he make a channel mixer B+W conversion for each cahnnel and then mixes and masks as needed, in a nutshell. If I were to apply myself to learn that method then I'd need his book for a good couple of weeks, so it might be worth getting for that technique if it interests you.

His philosophical meanderings might also appeal to others more than to me

Persoanlly I will get it out of the library if I need it again ( I have didtched ALL my Ps and photo books apart froma very small handfull - got rid of over £400 worth of books to charity.

I feel the same about his previous book , one good technique, i.e. his 'image maps'. However I should say that most photo books only really have one gem that makes the book worthwhile

If I were you I'd broswe it ina bookshop before buying- OH there arent any any more - oh well 0 library then!

having said that, if you are flush, I'd buy it because I do like the fact that he's puta lot of effort into it and I kinda like to support photo people that work hard ( which is why I did buy it myself origianlly)

Thanks Simon.

I don't like to overcomplicate things and this sounds like it could be a lot of unnecessary work for essentially the same result - a decent B&W.

That said, it's always good to keep the old grey matter sharp, so I might give it a go and send it back if I'm not getting anything from it.
