I think that, generally speaking , getting interaction (or its opposite) from te public does more ofr these sort of images than staright shots, but it is generally harder, I think anyway, to get something other than a 'traight' shot, of buskers and the like

I agree, but its a bit of a trade off, standing back a bit and getting a good interaction shot can work well,but is not easy on a busy street, but an in close portrait shot can show the features and character of a busker, which is also a good thing.
