Re: Our forum

I occasionally use TP and it seems fine to me, and easy to use.

Personally I'm not too bothered about adverts especially if they allow a free forum for administration people and users.

I was a late joiner to the old forum but Martin and Ian seemed to have to be making occasional pleas for contributions. And a fee paying membership is not good for increasing particioationemoticon

Re: Our forum

Fixed Costs

So far, I have worked out the fixed costs to move the forum as follows:

Hosting
The hosting server would be done with Tsohost as I already have my websites with them and have a good relationship with them

I suggest starting on the standard package which costs £36 per year.

For this we get 2.5GB disk space and 20GB of allocated bandwidth (These are flexible to some degree)

Forum Software
My choice of software will be Xenforo $140 one off payment

At the moment the forum is free but does have limitations. One main limitation is having to hot-link images to the forum rather than been able to place the image direct onto the server.

Hot-linking can be problematic for 2 reasons, 1) the user may not have anywhere to hotlink from 2) if the original image is removed then we end up with blank images in the forum which we currently do have.

I'm generally a bit wary of posting critiques of peoples images because, having done it in the past, I've found a few people had a bit of a thin skin and have either not replied back or in a couple of cases, never posted again.

to be honest if people can't take any criticism then I would have thought this wasn't the right forum for them anyway

As regards Ian not posting critique or relying to posts it must be remembered that he does a lot of work for the forum in the form of videos which take up a huge amount of his time, making panels, basically all the tech stuff here, so his input although not always seen is there behind the scenes.

yeah true - and thanks Ian! emoticon

Re: Our forum

certainly the forums I like to use best for USER EXPERIENCE rather than content are all v-bullitin run-having said that might it be worth contacting Pekka who runs POTN (where this all started) as he writes his own software and might have useful stuff to offer- you never know til you ask.....?

I would be happy to chip in as I did before if you want to go that route. I too was mightily miffed when the last board went down(but kept quiet)

The software you are liking looks ok Ian but I haven't had much experience of using anything run by it so I can't really offer an opinion.

INCENTIVES:

I would say that competitions, paid subscriptions etc would be successful if Ian or Martin offered one free print of the Subscribers own image or Ians or Martins-thier choice.

keep the emphasis on learning: by all means have a mobile phone section but still for LEARNING so critique is still open.

get people to agree to a T+C when they join and have at the very top that they are happy to accept constructive criticism. TBH if people are stroppy either giving or receiving crib then thats a job for the mods- you'll need more of those if the forum gets bigger

whats it MISSING?

a Blog. Look at really really successful sites and they have a blog or two by the owners and guest bloggers. generates lots of outside interest and probably the best way to build numbers

reviews of cameras, papers, tripods anything really- good info and good to get into search engines so it beingrds visitors

theres a few other marketing angles that could be added
e'g'
http://ppmastery.net/introduction-to-luminosity-masking/

what else is it missing-; a spellcheck-only teasing but still there were a few bloopers to start emoticon

Is there anything you feel needs adding or removing ?
keep paid for items in an entirely separate section

What do you want to gain from the forum ?

critique: first and foremost
socialising or whatever its called nowadays- I like the banter etc that the forum has so it is VERY important to keep its character
learning tools _vids-papers, reviews etcetc

I think it should be much clearer the methods of mono conversion thatundejpin the teaching of the forum i.e. Martins method and Ians

Two different methods which should really make the IDENTITY of the forum-IDENTITY is what sets it apart form others and what will attract people here once they know about it

that'll do for now,
