Our forum
Its either the time of year or we need to put some life into our bespoke little forum, I have been monitoring the posts for a while now and without a doubt the forum is slowly dying through lack of posts and interest.
So I am asking for ideas how we might get it going again.
We are restricted to what we can do on runboard but I see no reason why we could not run a monthly themed competition with a free print of choice printed free of charge for a choosen winner.
We could also set up an area like on the other forum where members allow access to a high res file for others to edit and see how they do.
That's just a couple of ideas, any other ideas welcome to get members participation,
The forum is 10 years old soon so lets see if we can keep it going for another 10.

Re: Our forum
Hi all
I am definitely in favour of keeping the forum going. A bit like Chris I have had problems lately (aged Mum) so my posts have been few and far between. I would certainly try and enter any friendly comps here, though themes are sometimes harder for me to achieve but willing to try!
Thanks to the moderators and administrators without their help the forum would not exist - THANK YOU!

Re: Our forum
I have the equipment to make reasonable, digital copies of 35mm slides and negatives, the software to process those digital copies and I am learning the ways to produce acceptable monochrome images. My dilemma is that I do not have the required starting material.
I can trawl again through my old 35mm stuff but I doubt if I will find anything of a good enough quality. Similarly, I can trawl through material that is available commercially but that is never really my own.
There is a lot of useful and interesting material available on this forum which is constantly being added to and I would hate to see it disappear so anything I can do to keep us alive I am prepared to try.

Re: Our forum
Like so many photographers who are members and lapsed members of our forum, i too find it difficult to dedicate time to my photography so my posts are somewhat spasmodic. However i am in favor of photo challenges, they are motivational and definitely give you the kick up the bum that you occasionally need, i have had some garlic in the fridge now for two weeks and must get round to arranging a still life....sad i know
I think it would be a good thing if we scored the posts, Composition,Tones, artistic merit etc,for different aspects so we could then find an all round winner
Regards,
Alan

Re: Our forum
Martin, I think you might reflect on the fact your absence in recent months is undoubtedly the single most significant factor in the relative lack of posts. I think that you - and Ian - play a fundamental role here. This is a 'learning' forum, people post here to gain insight into, and constructive, properly informed critique of, their mono photography. You both - most particularly you, as founder of the feast - are regarded with very considerable respect, and your comments are seen as carrying, with good reason, more weight than those of the 'peer to peer' nature that have been the staple of the forum recently.
I am sure that I am not alone in being very pleased to see you back, and I look forward to reading your comments on my own and other members' posts. It would be nice to see some occasional critical input from Mr Barber, who is notably silent (if Mr Barber will forgive me..) on other people's posts nowadays..

Re: Our forum
My ears started to burn so I thought I better investigate as to why
I have to hold my hands up and say I personally do not really comment on others work probably as much as I should do.
Critique of others work is something unless they have specifically requested it can sometimes open up a can of worms. I am always of the understanding that if someone posts an image without asking for critique, then the image has reached their expectation and is ready to be shown to the world. Whether as individuals we like it is another matter, it's all subjective at the end of the day.
On the other hand, if someone has reached a point where they are becoming lost, un-inspired or just can't see the wood for the trees and are reaching out for help, this is a different ball game, in cases like this, if the poster mentioned in the post that they are reaching out for critique then this could make it easier.

I think it would be useful to clarify this, as my view tends to the opposite ie people post an image and want to know what people think about it, with reasons. To me that fits in with this being a learning forum.
For me the key thing would be to make clear the behavioral norm in that regard for the forum as different forums do have different conventions. Eg the old Elements Village seemed to have a norm of 'only praise, don't comment adversely'. One of their main aims was to be super friendly and that convention helped them achieve that at the expense of constructive criticism (in my view)

Re: Our forum
I am with Chris about this being a learning forum. If I want to simply show off my pictures I can put them on my website and direct viewers there.
